A lot of people are fascinated by railways. The railways changed the lives of people irreversibly during the 19th century in the western world. Not only could people travel, products could be transported cheaply across long distances. One fundamental change was the introduction of synchronized standard time.

 

Before the railways, each town had their own local time, based on the sun. It was noon when the sun was highest in the sky. This meant that every town was on its own time. But with the railways come the need for a synchronized standard time in the whole country.
